Echoes of Icecrown. 3.3 Soundclips (Spoilers)

The following article contains major plot spoilers from PTR/datamined content.

Some big lore news was reported last night on MMO Champion with the posting of many of the sound files to be included in Patch 3.3. Not only do we have a smattering of the boss voices (truly, some are hilarious), but we also hear two important scenes that advance the plot and develop these characters a bit more—three scenes, actually, if you count the Horde and Alliance versions separately.

Don't worry, I won't spoil anything major on this front page. I've safely linked the YouTube uploads of the files below, so you'll have to go there to hear them specifically (all files present at the time of this writing). If you're curious about what's going to happen after the battle with the Deathbringer and also during the events of the 5-man dungeons, read on and click the links.

Varian Redeemed?

No, this doesn't have much of anything to directly do with the plot, but it does address some of the rampant Varian Wrynn hate that's been flowing around. Claims of his genocidal and racist nature have bubbled up venomously from those die hard Horde supporters who feel Wrynn is nothing more than a warmonger hell bent on the destruction of their way of life.

This is largely untrue. He is a man of honor, and this is proven by his words after the Deathbringer encounter (assumed):

Spirits of Frostmourne

Here we hear two encounters, one Horde and one Alliance, that mirror each other depending on your faction. We can reasonably assume that this is what we'll encounter in the Halls of Reflection instance, at the end of the 5-man chain of dungeons.

Listen specifically for a revelation regarding the truth about the Lich King, his weakness, and the ultimate fate of the Scourge.

Perhaps I was wrong in my previous belief...

Conclusion

It's good to see Blizzard further develop King Varian's character, proving him to be the good man that we knew he was prior to the events of the Wrathgate. Seeing them tear down the facade of the warmonger is refreshing in the midst of the oppressiveness that is Northrend.

Now let's see them do the same for Garrosh, eh?

Conversely, I'm a little disappointed at what the Lich King revelations hint towards, as I feel that the potential story arc is a little ... rehashed. Perhaps we'll get a big surprise and the obvious assumed conclusion won't be what we actually see. But as it stands, it's leaning heavily towards the possibility that our immolated friend may have a story yet to come...

What Does Icecrown Bring? Part II

Part I of this article yesterday speculated about a possible outcome for The Frozen Halls 5-man dungeon encounter. Today I'd like to continue that and peek into what could possibly happen in The Frozen Throne climax.

The Frozen Throne

Confirmed Lore Characters: Tirion Fordring, High Overlord Saurfang, Muradin Bronzebeard, Darion Mograine, Varian Wrynn, The Lich King

Speculated Lore Characters: Saurfang the Younger (Deathbringer Saurfang), Bolvar Fordragon

The 10/25 man raid events take on an entirely different flavor than The Frozen Halls, at least from the previews. Whereas the The Frozen Halls lore takes on a much more personal feel due to Jaina and Sylvanas's involvement, The Frozen Throne lore gets scaled up to something exceedingly more epic.

It is here we see the culmination of the less personal and more political story arcs in Wrath of the Lich King. Certainly, Tirion, Saurfang, Muradin, Darion, and Varian all have personal ties to the Lich King, but somehow it's hard to say that any of them have the same burning hatred or hopeless longing that we see in Sylvanas or Jaina (except maybe Darion and Muradin). Here, in the raid, we're talking the final battle of this war.

We see the merger of the Argent Crusade with the Ebon Blade to form the Ashen Verdict, which sets up a nice way for the death knights to break apart as a faction after the culmination of this story. A part of me believes that we may see Darion Mograine's death in Icecrown, possibly at the hands of his father, Alexandros. If this happens, the Ebon Blade will lose their leader, but may gather once again within their respective Horde / Alliance factions.

Who will lead them? Well, Blizzard seems to be pushing Thassarian to the forefront with his upcoming manga, and there's no reason that Koltira Deathweaver can't play a similar role Hordeside. Afterall, both of these characters were the "first" of their kind.  What with the increase in the Horde vs. Alliance conflict, it only makes sense to break apart the unity of the Ebon Blade and allow them to fight each other like everyone else, right?

And what could Blizzard mean by this:

"The Lich King's most powerful death knight then stands as the final obstacle for the heroes to enter the upper reaches of the citadel."

Could we be finally seeing the payoff setup all the way back during the Wrathgate event? For the Hordeside, could the "most powerful death knight" be Overlord Saurfang's son, now rumored to be Deathbringer Saurfang? Afterall, Overlord Saurfang is commanding the Horde gunship...

And for the Alliance, will we be seeing the return of Bolvar Fordragon? Only time will tell.

There are some truly intriguing lore possibilities hidden within Icecrown, and there are still many questions yet to be answered. What is Varian doing? Will Garrosh be present? Will Jaina and Sylvanas make an appearance in the final battle?

It's not too long from now that these questions, and many more, will most likely be answered. And after that, one of the longer-running story arcs in Warcraft will finally come to a close.

I'm almost sad to see it all wrapped up...
